It means having self control and awareness about the pitfalls that can befall you as you try to save. If you are serious about learning how to save here are some tips to get you started.
1. Start by doing a budget. List all your expenses, including things that tend to get forgotten such as money for gifts and annual expenses. Does your income exceed your expenses? If not look for areas you can reduce your spending on such as: stop smoking, make your lunches.
2. Avoid buying on impulse. Think about the item you want to buy. Stop and ask yourself: Is it a want or is it a need? Can you buy it cheaper elsewhere? Do you need to buy it new?
3. If you need that item then save for it. Can you get it second hand? Think of second hand in terms of pre-loved. Can you get it on sale?
4. Avoid shopping if you are feeling down as it’s so easy to buy something to “cheer you up”. This only ends up making you feel guilty and does nothing for your financial well-being.
5. You can save money on your household bill by conserving electricity. Always turn off appliances that are not in use. Each month compare your electricity bills to check that you are reducing costs.
6. Credit card debts are one of the main causes for financial stress. Control your spending and use your credit cards wisely by paying the account in full each month. If you can’t do this don’t take the card with you when you shop.
7. Borrow rather than buy — use your local library rather than buying books and magazines. Trade or swap items with friends.
These are only a few tips on how to reduce spending and save money but they will help to get you on your way to a healthy financial lifestyle and financial success.
