I love gourmet coffee and found that by having great coffee at home and by brewing it in a Melitta filter, I could make mine taste as good or even better than the stuff they have on tap at Starbucks.
But it was still costing more than I would have preferred — I went through a pound awfully quickly. But now, I have figured out a way to make it last quite a bit longer…
For years, I would throw out the grounds after one go-around. What a waste!
I did that because when I poured more hot water through the filter for a second cup, that cup tasted pretty inferior, to put it politely. It was less intense and flavorful, and kind of watery too.
Now, I’ve discovered a trick for “freshening up” the coffee grounds and getting a second (and sometimes third) cup out of them that tastes almost as good as the first one!
How did I do that? One day, on a hunch, I added about a teaspoon of fresh coffee on top of the already used and rather soggy grounds and added boiling water.
I wasn’t sure what would happen, but let’s just say, I was rather pleased. This tasted almost as good as the original. So now, I’ve added it to my routine, and I get almost twice as many cups of coffee from each and every single pound. Especially since I happen to like at least two big mugs of coffee at a time. So this trick works perfectly for me.
So I suggest you might want to give that a try as well. And, if you like, you can also do a taste test…
Just for the fun of it, compare the difference in taste if you add that water with and without that extra freshly ground coffee added. It’s an impressive difference (I think).
Of course, while you’re doing the taste testing, also compare the result to a freshly brewed cup.
Note that the coffee will drip through more slowly during that second round, so you’ll need some patience. You’ll also have to pour additional water over the grounds more than once because the water-logged “old” grounds take up so much space in the filter. But it works, and now my gourmet cup of coffee costs only a little more than half of what I used to pay.
