Remote Working Part 1 – the Rough Guide – Summary

Quickbooks online

Obviously not everybody can work remotely as some vocations require people to consistently attend their office or travel to undertake their tasks in person. But for those of us given the opportunity to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share my experiences and present some practical wisdom by writing and publishing it on the Internet in the hope that I could give others valuable advice for adapting to remote working or supervising remote workers.

I should warn you that there are many self proclaimed ‘gurus’ out there who will try and persuade you to purchase information for preposterous sums of money, take my word for it you don’t have to do this.

I am privileged to be permitted to work anywhere I choose and just about everybody who asks me what work I do wants to know how I am able to work remotely. Don’t get the wrong idea I am still perfecting the science of remote working as each day I come across tribes on the net who teach me new ways and I am continually finding new packages and approaches that make my life easier and improve my productivity.

During the past 7 years I have substantially adapted my working practices to allow me to do just about all of my work remotely with a kit of internet tools and robust self management. One late night whilst exploring the net I discovered Quickbooks online and this got me thinking about what just might be possible. My discovery of web based ‘on demand’ small business accounting software was a special moment for me and the beginning of my ‘remote working history.

I want to say up front that effectively working remotely is as much about the tools as it is about self discipline. Working remotely also means putting it to your co-workers, supervisors and customers as to what they can expect and how they will stay in touch with you.

In ‘Remote Working Part 2 – Why self discipline is important’ I show you how to focus.
