Suggestion:
It will be hard to get into accounting if you do not have the education or experience. Retail will be pretty much worthless in terms of relevant experience, but, you could use your retail experience to show that you can work with people, have good communication skills, and can be trusted with handling money. If you don't have any short of education in accounting, I would suggest going back to school. It will be almost impossible to get into the field without some sort of education.
But if you have the education already, tweak your resume to show how your retail experienced strengthened your communication skills. For example, when describing what you did for your retail job, you could say something like "demonstrated strong communication skills by working with customers"…or something along those lines. The number one skill employers look for these days is strong communication skills.
